TRAINING

Sorry ! As of AUG 05 We have suspended trainings as I am far to busy with repairs to spend time at this ! You are welcome to check back from time to time to check on my status !! ......Brian

YES WE CAN PROVIDE ANY KIND !!!!

Perhaps by now, you sense from my writings, that the knowledge base of which customers rely on is in my opinion, weak. This business is NOT regulated in a way to become a "professional business". That one must pass certain curricular or theoretical levels does not happen in this business. In fact, the original government apprenticeship I obtained, no longer exists and the only other method of certification was to study at George Brown College in Toronto (former teacher Peter Topping now resides here in Calgary and runs his own industrial sewing machine service/sales-see: Industrial Machines) and that study has since been dropped.

I believe I can take a "technician" that has been repairing machines for 30-years and put them through the first day of our "basic knowledge" course and open their eyes to material never before known! My example of this? (and be honest with yourself!) Did you actually know ALL of the information provided on this Web page? (i.e., Ndls./thread /feet >Technical Advice). I have become convinced since returning to the retail end of things that it cannot possibly be! This is why I believe that repairs everywhere, could stand an improvement in technique, especially when machines today can sell for as much as a car! I have always offered my services to anyone who asks (I don't believe in NOT sharing knowledge!). If I could convince just my area marketplace to come together and see what I do and why...I know that things would work so much better for all. (most importantly the SEWER!) As it stands now.....my customers love us.....our competition doesn't. There is a lot of work out there and I don't think animosity is necessary, only education.

We provide the following 2-major courses at Great Western Sewing Machine Services as starter studies:

BASIC KNOWLEDGE
This course deals with needles & thread, all the way up to the step-by-step process of a full sewing machine "OVERHAUL". The "OVERHAUL" sequence and procedure alone is well worth the price of admission! As we talk about each step and how it applies to even computerized machines, etc., you will earn how to apply this fundamental knowledge to ANY machine and eventually learn to use service manuals/dealership service seminars for what they are.......REFERENCE MATERIAL!! After all, I taught as a "Service Manager" at these meetings across the land. We would demonstrate, for example, how to remove the covers or how to make common adjustments on the new models being marketed. BUT if you don't know WHY you are adjusting it (function) then there is no point in knowing HOW to adjust it!

BASIC SERGER KNOWLEDGE
This course continues from the fundamental information taught in the 1st half of the Basic knowledge course, introducing serger function and operations; from fabric to fabric sewing adjustments, including common fault recognition (customer based). We then continue through a full "OVERHAUL" procedure and step-by-step discussions on how to diagnose common sewing machine/serger mechanical problems; as well, you will learn to determine and apply the solutions.

OTHER COURSES OFFERED:

We also structure all other types of instructional material but handle each type from what/when it is needed. For example:

-We can teach you how to fix and repair any and all types of sewing machines and sergers" (Elna, Pfaff, Bernina, Singer, etc.)(labor specific type knowledge, for example how to disassemble and replace specific gears/parts)

-Conduct meetings for various quilt guild/organization, etc. (i.e.; personal machine maintenance, valuable accessory use). Just let us know what is wanted and needed and I will help in any way I can! As the bulk of my revenue at Great Western is derived from sewing machine/serger/circuit board repair, the cost of my time in which I conduct service seminars is based on the lost revenue from the "shop" during that time. A cost of $400.00 (Cdn.) has been set for a full day. This, of course, also depends on the number of people that are sharing the fee. If you are interested in any of the "offers" regarding consultation services, please send us a message TO:
